It's pretty self explanatory, washing your hair with only conditioner. That's right, no shampoo.

What It Does
It cleans your hair gently, leaving your scalp and hair less stripped of moisture. It may not be enough to get out super sticky styling products but it will wash out almost everything. Yes, it really does clean your hair just fine.

Who Should Try It?
It is most popular with people that have curly hair and chemically processed hair. I would recommend it to anyone concerned with dryness, brittleness, and/or breakage. Some people that struggle with greasy hair found relief co-washing so it might be worth a try for those that struggle with oil. It may not be best for certain scalp conditions that require medicated shampoo. As someone that struggles with hereditary scalp eczema I found co-washing has alleviated a lot of my symptoms. Those will dyed hair will likely love it because NOTHING (aside from not washing at all) comes close to the co-wash's color saving power.

Products
There are a lot of products on the market specifically marketed as cleansing conditioners. They're really not that special and you can cleanse with just about any conditioner. The only thing I recommend avoiding is silicones. A conditioner that contains silicones will cause build up and will make your hair feel heavy, dirty and gross if not washed out with shampoo... which is what we are trying to avoid. Many so-called cleansing conditioners are full of silicones. Many cleansing conditioners will also tell you to use a ton of product, "30-50 pumps" every freakin' wash. Aw hell naw, don't buy into that crap and use just enough to completely coat your hair. Just work it in, leave it in a few minutes if it has penetrating natural oils, then rinse it out.

I suggest experimenting with different conditioners until you find one (or more) that you like for cleansing. You can also cleanse with one conditioner and then condition with another more moisturizing conditioner afterward.

Co-Washing Favorites
Suave Tropical Coconut
It's not super moisturizing but does a great job for cleansing. It's silicone free and super inexpensive. The consistency is a bit runny so it's easy to work into your hair and scalp. For me, I need to follow with a more moisturizing conditioner.

Tresemme Naturals
Another inexpensive silicone free conditioner. I find this more moisturizing than the Suave one.

L'Oreal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner
If you can find it (it's been discontinued) grab it! The only place I still find it at is Harmon's. This is my favorite cleansing conditioner. For me this product works as a single step, I don't need to moisturize afterward. I also don't need to add any anti-frizz serums or leave in conditioners afterward. It cleanses beautifully, removes any and all stubborn styling products and whatever else gets stuck in my hair. Also it totally restores my hair after it's been bleached. SO SO SO annoyed it's been discontinued. The only negatives I have to say about this (other than it not being available) is how little product you got for the price.

As I Am Coconut CoWash
Very easy to work into your hair due to the slightly runny consistency, similar to the Suave product. This stuff is very moisturizing and I like to leave it on for 20 minutes as a deep conditioner. This is a really nice product and is particularly recommended for those with curly hair or chemically processed hair. Never had any issues with buildup with this product.

EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shae CoWash
This product is pretty similar to the As I Am product. If you like shea products for your hair you'll probably like this. For me shea is a bit heavy and caused some buildup.

EDEN BodyWorks Peppermint Tea Tree Conditioner
THIS is my go-to for my scalp eczema! This stuff is amazing. It's insanely moisturizing though and may be way too heavy for most hair. I love the minty scent and the tingling sensation on my scalp, but most of all I love that I gets rid of my crusty patches. While it is heavy, it's oil based and doesn't cause buildup. It may leave you with greasy feeling hair if you don't thoroughly rinse. With thorough rinsing, this oil based conditioner does a great job removing styling products. No, I'm not dead LOL! Haven't had much time for blogging. I started a new full time job in January, went down to part time at my old job and started hitting the gym so I haven't had much free time.

My hair is currently Adore Neon Pink, Adore Sunrise Orange and a little Manic Panic Electric Banana. I'm really loving Neon Pink and having pink hair again. People are nicer to me when my hair is pink than when it is orange. >_>

I have not been doing anything remotely interesting with makeup. Boring cat eye, but it's classic and looks good.
I bought these Superga 2750 leopard print sneakers last month. I love them! They're very comfy but holy foot sweat, Batman... these are full on furry (go ahead, pet them) leather and don't breathe at all.

Currently I have a bad cold. It's nearly 90 degree weather so being sick is really obnoxious. Hot tea makes my throat feel better but it's just not what you want when you're sweating. Wake me up when it's October! It's been in the high 80s since the first week of may which is really abnormal for the Northeastern US. I loathe shorts and love jackets so I always hate hot weather, I never feel like I look good. I think I'll just suffer the heat in pants all year rather than risk blinding someone with my snow white thighs!
Basically my life is this: wake up, get dressed, go to work for 10 hours, come home and eat dinner, shower, go to bed. My work commute is long and just adds to the exhaustion.

Now I am job hunting, trying to find something closer to home with a more steady schedule so I can have some sort of life outside work. This unfortunately means I have to tone down my hair. I got rid of the pink at the end of summer by fading it and applying Manic Panic Electric Lava which gave me a lovely orange ombre and I would've left it alone if I wasn't trying to find a new job.

Any way, I wanted to stick with red and wanted it to still be bright. I took my inspiration from L'oreal Feria Mango Intense Copper. I'm allergic to PPD used in permanent dyes (and did not want the extra damage) so I could not actually use the Feria dye. I created a similar shade with Adore colors. I used Ginger, Orange Blaze and Paprika. Next time I dye I will use less Orange Blaze and Ginger and more Paprika because it took 3 attempts to get it to look more brown and less traffic cone orange.

The color on the Feria box looks more muted than pictures of it on hair, a quick google search shows how bright it is.
Recently picked up the purple Conair You Curl curling wand. I never ever ever curl my hair because every attempt usually winds up as a big fat fail! I just can't do the right side of my head with a curling iron or a straightener so this curling wand thing was my final attempt at having curls/ waves. (I also have those bendy foam stick things to curl with out heat but they are super uncomfortable to sleep in and give me large tight curls that make my hair shoulder length.)

As you can see, I am totally able to use the You Curl! I will do a proper review of this thing after vacation, one with pictures of the product and all LOL. I can't guarantee you will see pictures of me using it since I haven't mastered taking a photo on my phone with my foot, but there will be before and afters at least.

The styling product I use to hold the curl is Garnier Wonder Waves. It holds them really well but I don't like how it makes my hair feel. My hair gets dry and kind of crunchy and I have to wash it out at the end of the day. If I sleep with it in my hair gets tangled very badly. Ugh, but NOTHING else seems to hold curls for me. Well, at least my hair looks soft.Spookihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16701628672995907520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5863179013564933898.post-85828164448215456742014-07-07T08:02:00.001-07:002014-07-18T05:53:09.360-07:00Hair Dye Primer

This is going to be a brief explanation of the different kinds of hair dye- semi, demi, and permanent. The terms are often confusing and can cause people to choose the wrong dye.

Permanent
A permanent dye is the longest lasting, right? Not necessarily. Permanent dyes use the highest volume developer (peroxide) to activate the dye and make it stick to the hair. Peroxide is damaging and high volume peroxide more damaging than lower volume peroxide. Damage to hair is cumulative, meaning you can't repair it so if you apply permanent dyes to the same hair over and over it really adds up and causes breakage. Permanents can also fade faster than other kinds of dye due to the higher peroxide levels. The peroxide lifts the cuticle (the scaly outer part of the hair) so the dye can slip inside the hair. If the cuticle is lifted too much or scales are broken off the hair dye will slide back out.

Box dyes are typically permanents but the danger with them is you don't know what volume peroxide is included. Is it 20, 30, 40? Even calling the company doesn't always answer the question as the phone reps don't have a clue. Typically they have 30 and high lift dyes (typically come in blondes or reds) have 40.

Speaking of high lift dyes... L'oreal High Color has become a very popular way to get red or pink hair with out "harmful bleaching". High lift dyes use high level peroxide to lift color (like bleaching) but don't lift as effectively as bleach and often cause more damage due to the higher peroxide level. For example if I wanted to get my hair bright red from its natural brown-black I could use 20 volume developer and bleach to get my hair to ginger or I could use 40 volume developer and high lift dye to lift my hair to ginger and deposit color in one step. The 40 volume developer is very damaging and not really safe for the scalp, you risk chemical burns. If you do use a high lift dye it is important to top up your color with a dye that does not use peroxide (more on that later) and NOT with the high lift dye. If you use high lift color on the same hair multiple times you will have major damage. You WILL get hair that mushes up like chewing gum when wet. Unfortunately permanent reds need frequent topping up as they fade very fast.

Demi-permanent
Demi dyes are deposit only dyes that use peroxide developer to activate the color and attach it to the hair. The low volume peroxide, typically 10 volume or less, does not lift the color of the natural hair and is far less damaging than permanents. You can't use a demi to get your hair a shade or two lighter like you can with a permanent though. You can only go darker or change the tone.

Demi-perms are probably the best way to get black hair. You don't need lift to go black so there is no need to harm your hair with high volume peroxide. They also can last a long time, typically 3-4 weeks which is about the same as many permanents. Demi dyes can last longer than permanents on many people due to the lower level of damage to the cuticle.

Semi-permanent
A true semi-permanent dye is a deposit only dye that does not require developer. Many box dyes that say they are semi-permanent are actually demis. True semis are sometimes called veggie dyes or direct dyes. These dyes are basically colored conditioners and do not damage the hair at all. However, they don't stick well to unprocessed hair. Typically you will need to bleach or at least "pre-soften" the hair with straight peroxide to allow semi-perms to stick to the hair. The pre-processing required to use these dyes is where the damage comes from but careful lightening can be done and yield minimal damage.

Semi dyes can actually make the hair feel very nice due to their conditioning ingredients and are actually good for bleached hair. They are a much better choice to tone blonde hair than toners that require developer. No double processing (using peroxide twice in a row) required!

Semi dyes also tend to come in wild colors like pink, blue and green while you'll never find those colors in demis and permanents (at least in the USA and UK). On the flipside it can be hard to find natural semis but they are out there. The brand Adore makes some very nice natural looking semis and they are a fantastic way to get a gorgeous long lasting natural looking red... or unnatural looking red too!

This kind of dye can fade fast or it can last a very long time. There are a ton of variables that effect the lasting ability of the dye. Some dyes just last forever and a half because they stain like crazy and are basically super permanent (as in you will not remove this color from your hair ever). Special Effects Atomic Pink and the Ion brand blue shades fall into this camp. Other dyes are just weakly pigmented like Pravana Magenta, pastel shades and Manic Panic Purple Haze. The condition of the hair prior to applying color also makes a big difference. Cuticle too smooth like in unprocessed hair and it won't stick. Cuticle too damaged from over processing and it won't stick either. After care probably makes the biggest difference though. Washing with hot water and regular sulfate based shampoos will take semi dyes out very quickly. Switching to sulfate free shampoo or conditioner only washing and reducing how much you wash will make these dyes last a long time.

A Word on Conditioners
After dying our hair we pretty much always apply conditioner to make it feel better. When I was a teen dying my hair with box dyes my friend and I used to wonder why people said they were so bad because our hair always felt better after. The conditioner included with the dye is typically LOADED with silicones that coat the hair and make it feel really smooth and amazing. The damage they caused was being disguised.

Deep conditioning is great to do after processing hair but make sure to check the ingredients. Choose a deep conditioner that contains oils like coconut, olive, argan, meadowfoam and shea and is low or free of silicones. The oils will actually help the hair rather than coat it.

Silicones are not all bad though. They can be very useful to prevent mechanical damage and keep hair from tangling. Just don't let them fool you into thinking your hair is in better condition than it is and that it can take another chemical process.
Been working towards lighter ends and making a red-orange-yellow ombre instead of going Napalm Orange. Special Effects STILL is not producing or shipping colors regularly. I make my own neon orange by mixing Sparks Orange, Sparks Yellow and N'Rage Bubble Gum Pink.

I'm not sure my ends will be able to go as light as I'd like due to the hair being old and possible staining from all the red and orange dyes used previously. They are down from a level 4 to about a level 7 now so I think that's pretty good.
These pleather shorts are not going to be the most comfortable once it really starts getting warm but they're great for spring. I got these boots from GoJane when they sent me a 40% off coupon. I think I paid about $22 for them. They are not great quality but they are comfortable at least. I replaced the shitty laces they came with with regular flat laces so they stay tied. The soles of these leave a lot to be desired, there is little tread and they don't grip well. I have to be careful walking on smooth tile floors because I slide around as if I were wearing socks.

I also wore my bird skull necklace. I bought this years ago off Etsy and I don't remember the seller's name. These bird skull charms are pretty generic though.

I do like that this one has a decent chain and has a more natural bone color than some of the other bird skull necklaces I've seen around.
There are few things in the world that catch my eye like bright freshly colored hair (especially when it's orange). Shiny, vibrant, beautiful... until you wash it then it's a drab murky mess...

WASHING:
Washing is hair color enemy number 1! There is no way to wash your hair with out leaching out some color but there are methods that will make a huge difference.

Shampoo, especially shampoo with sulfates will take out the most color. Handy for when you want to fade but the worst thing you can use when you want to preserve your color. Chelating and dandruff shampoos will also pull out a ton of color.

Even plain water pulls some color out, cooler water is supposed to be better than hot water but I can't stand freezing my arse off in the shower. I haven't noticed a difference between hot and cold water but some people do.

Washing with conditioner instead of shampoo does wonders. You can use any conditioner but silicone free is best to prevent build up. There are also cleansing conditioners like L'oreal EverCreme and As I Am Coconut COwash made specifically to remove product build up and give more cleansing power than regular conditioners.

Don't rub and scrub and rough up your hair while washing it. The more you work in your cleanser the more color it will pull out.

Rinse only long enough to get the product out, don't stand with your hair under the running water while you day dream in the shower.

Wash ONLY when you really, really need to. You might be surprised how long you can go with out washing. I typically do 5-7 days between washes but some people go even longer.

If you have multiple colors and want to prevent the colors mixing you'll have to wash each section separately. Have someone help you do it over the sink if you can.

Rinse with vinegar. Take a teeny bit of white or apple cider vinegar and dilute it with water. Pour in on your head, work it into your hair, wring out the excess but don't rinse. Use too much vinegar and it will pull out some color so you may have to play around with ratios. I use like a cap full to about a cup of water (very accurate, I know). The low pH helps close the cuticle and makes your hair SO soft and shiny.

STYLING PRODUCTS:

If your hair gets greasy quickly invest in dry shampoo (my favorites are Batiste, Not Your Mother's, Oscar Blandi).

Avoid hair spray, it can cause fading and it also needs to be washed out.

Avoid using anything that will require serious scrubbing to get out (like my beloved volumizing powder).

ENVIRONMENTAL HAIR COLOR KILLERS:

Bright wonderful sunshine will fade your dye, grab a big hat or a parasol or just stay in the shade as much as possible. Don't have to tell my pasty ass twice. Pass the sunscreen!

The lovely ocean also wants to take your dye. Salt water pulls out color like crazy so wear a swimming cap.

Chlorinated water in swimming pools is also a color killer.

Lightening your hair has the potential to go very, very wrong. Nobody wants chewy, stretchy hair that looks like mozzarella cheese. [video link]

I am by no means a professional and I don't have any professional training. The following tips are compiled from research I did before bleaching my own hair and from personal experience.

I was extremely nervous the first time I did it on my own, it had been years since I had bleached hair for friends and decades since my own hair had been done. The major reason I was scared was the condition of my hair.

The condition your hair is in needs to be carefully assessed before bleaching (or any process that involves peroxide). If your hair is already quite damaged it's best not to bleach. My own hair was very dry and it's also seriously fine, so fine that every hair stylist I have seen comments on how they've never seen finer stands. I was worried that my hair might be too fine to handle bleach. Fine hair can be prone to breakage but mine doesn't seem too bad as I am able to grow it out very long (I used to have hair past my butt once upon a time). The other thing I was nervous about was all the years of box dye. I wasn't sure if it had all been cut off and box dye blacks are obnoxious to remove. I had stopped dying it after developing a PPD allergy 6 years ago so I had 6 years of "virgin" growth. My hair was definitely in better condition than it had been when I was dying it black so I decided to just get on with it and do a strand test.

Strand tests are SUPER IMPORTANT! Do not skip a strand test even if you have never had an allergic reaction to anything ever in your life. A strand test will not only potentially save you from a life threatening allergic reaction but they will also help with timing. No two heads of hair as the same so they react slightly differently to the same processes. Watch the strand test as it develops to get an idea how long you will need to leave the bleach on.

My strand test showed I needed about an hour to lighten my lengths. Hair farthest from your head will take longer than hair closest to your scalp because of the heat of your head. Heat makes bleach process quickly. To contrast that, my roots typically only take 15-20 minutes to get to pale yellow.

If your hair doesn't lighten to the level you need it to in one bleaching DON'T bleach it again immediately after. Bleach damage is cumulative. That means it builds up every time you do it. Once your hair is damaged you can never repair it. Hair is dead, it is not living tissue, it will not heal. No matter what that bottle of deep conditioner tells you, you can not truly fix it. Bleach damage can take about a month to show up. Your hair may feel alright after, but give it a few weeks and it may start snapping off. You also need to give your poor scalp some time to heal.

If your hair patchy or not light enough for the color you want after one go I recommend dying it a darker version of the color you want. After a month or so, assess your hair again and bleach it if it's able to handle it. Gradually lighten! It can take many months to get from one color to another, especially drastic changes like black to white blonde can take a year or more.

Assess the condition of your hair before bleaching. Check for damage by tugging on a small section of your hair when wet. Does it break or feel gummy? Don't bleach. If it stays strong you should be ok.

If you hair was dyed using a dye that uses peroxide use a color remover like Color Oops, Color Zap, Color B4, JoBaz, or Decolour Remover. These work by shrinking the color molecule so it can be washed out. You can find more info about these products here.

Before bleaching make sure to not wash your hair for several days. Let it get dirty! The oils will help protect your scalp from chemical burns.

Also, coat your hair and scalp with coconut oil. Coconut oil may prevent protein loss- more info can be found here.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER bleach if your scalp has any scratches or cuts no matter how minor. Even the teeniest rake of a finger nail can turn into a chemical burn.

DO A STRAND TEST! Instructions can be found here.

Make sure you have enough bleach and developer, It's better to buy a tub of bleach and a jug of developer than those little packets.

Use the right developer- almost everyone should stay as far away from 40 vol as possible. Use 30 for very dark or resistant hair. Most people should be fine with 20 vol. The lower the developer the less likely you are to fry your hair and burn your scalp. It may take longer to lighten but it's worth it.

Check that your bleach and developer are safe for "on the scalp" use. If they're not then DON'T use them on your scalp! Those bleaches will only be good for your lengths. I don't bother with them because I just want one product that I can use again for root touch ups.

Read reviews before making a choice, some bleaches lighten better than others. Many people like Matrix Light Master and Wella Blondor. I use Sally's house brand Ion and have good results. I use the line for sensitive scalp and have never had any discomfort or irritation. I don't recommend Manic Panic Flash Lightening Kits or L'oreal Quick Blue.

Make sure to buy plastic gloves, plastic measuring cups, a tint brush, plastic mixing bowl, plastic spoon, plastic cap, plastic sectioning clips and if you want, a cape to cover yourself. PLASTIC. No metal, it will react with the bleach!

Wear the gloves! Your fingers will get really dry and irritated if you don't. Like this. It turns white and hard then starts peeling off. It's a chemical burn, kids, and may require medical attention!

Set aside a whole day (or two) to devote to your hair so you don't feel the need to rush.

Get a friend to help if you can. Make sure it's a friend and not a frenemy, you need someone you can trust LOL.

Make sure to mix the bleach well and apply it quickly. If you're doing a whole head by yourself I recommend doing it in sections. As in do one area, let it process completely, wash out your bleach, dry your hair and do another section. This will help prevent uneven results.

ALWAYS apply bleach to the midlengths first, then ends and LASTLY do the roots (about 1 inch closest to the scalp). Remember how I said it takes 1 hour for my lengths and 20 mins for my roots? Mix up bleach for your lengths and apply it. Wait 40 mins (or what your strand test tells you) then mix more bleach and do your roots. This helps give even results. I say midlengths first because the cuticle on the ends tends to be more lifted (ends are usually more damaged) so they often lift quicker than hair in the middle.

If bleach dries out it stops working. Bleach needs to stay warm and moist so make sure to put a plastic cap on. If it dries, wash it off ASAP because it won't lighten any more, just damage.

If your scalp burns, gets hot or itchy at any point rinse off the bleach RIGHT NOW. Don't ignore it, you may be having an allergic reaction or getting a chemical burn.

Doing a bleach bath rather than a full strength bleach may be the best choice for you. It will dilute the peroxide for a more controlled lightening. Bleach baths also spread easier through the hair. Don't know how to do one? Click right here.

Pay attention while the bleach is on your head, don't let yourself get distracted because it can be as little as say 5 minutes between perfect light hair and over bleached mess. I keep a mirror on my desk and check my hair frequently. Slide the bleach off the hair and check the color. If it's not light enough smooth the bleach back on, tuck it back in the cap and wait a few more minutes. Remember timing with your strand test!

If you plan on dying your hair after bleaching it don't condition your hair. Just wash it out with shampoo, detangle with your fingers and dry it. Conditioner will push the cuticle down and prevent dye from soaking into the hair.

Assess the condition of your hair after bleaching, tug it while it's wet. Stretchy? Gummy? Let's hope not. But if you accidentally fried your hair click here.

Bleached hair is dry and thirsty. Give it a drink of coconut oil again. Coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair and makes it swell with moisture. This can help prevent breakage.

Avoid using conditioners and hair products with silicones after bleaching because silicones sit outside the hair and coat it. They make the hair feel great and can disguise the actual condition of your hair. If you are using them and want to know what your hair is really like wash with clarifying shampoo, don't condition, then dry and feel your hair. I'm not one of those anti-silicone people but it is important to know that they can mislead you. I have seen a few girls wind up ruining their hair because it felt great due to 'cones but was really not in any condition to be bleached.

Use a protein treatment after bleaching to help temporarily repair your hair. I swear by Joico K-pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor. These fill in the gaps of the cuticle and make your hair feel nicer, make it stronger (temporarily) and reduce porosity (temporarily). Do them weekly, no more often than that. The reason for that is over doing the protein makes hair dry and brittle... which is what we are trying to prevent. Joico products can sometimes be found for sale in salons and beauty supply shops but you will probably have to order this from Amazon or eBay. Some places require a license to buy it and many salons just offer it as a service.

Since protein treatments are drying make sure to have a good deep conditioner on hand to use afterward. Joico makes a product called Intense Hydrator designed to be used after the DPR.

Lastly, get a nice trim after bleaching. I take about an inch or so off the ends and watch for split ends in the coming weeks. If I still have splits I do another inch. Sharp good scissors are a must!

If your scalp is crusty and weeping fluid after bleaching seek medical care. This is a chemical burn! Chemical burns can be minor but they can also be serious and lead to scaring and bald spots. Even if they are minor you should still get medical care because they can become infected.

How light you need to go depends on the color you want to dye... reds and oranges need only to lighten to levels 3-7 for example. Pastel colors will need a 10, which needs to be TONED not bleached to levels 11 and 12. Never bleach to white. White is the point of no return, your hair will be ruined.

Toning is done with toners, you can buy them or make your own. Add just a teeny drop of dye (use only direct dyes like Manic Panic, Adore, Directions, Punky Color, etc) to enough white conditioner to cover your whole head. Toners made with direct dyes are often best left on for hours, while toners that require developer may only require 5-15 minutes. Keep in mind developer will further damage hair so you want to carefully assess your hair's condition first.

I love playing around with different dyes. Right now I currently have a mix that is about 70% Adore Orange Blaze, 20% Sparks Orange Crush and 10% Manic Panic Electric Lava. These pictures were taken after one wash.

The Adore and Sparks dyes don't quite have the sticking
power of Electric Lava, but EL is one of those dyes that stains hair and
doesn't like to budge. The fade is a little patchy because the front
section of my hair has been dyed a zillion more times than the back but
it's not too bad.

My work place had a policy change that allows us to have visible tattoos and piercings and have any color hair we want so I am tranistioning to a more "in-your-face" bright orange. I plan on doing a bleach bath to lighten up my ends a bit more and get everything brighter.

I'm not totally sure whether it was Special Effects Fish Bowl or Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise used on the clip but I'm thinking it's most likely the Manic Panic. This poor clip in extension somehow wound up stuffed in my junk drawer and became a horrible matted mess. I was able to salvage it but so much hair fell out of it I was sure it was destined for the trash. Orange lipsticks have become a favorite for me since dying my hair red-orange. My go-to lippie has been L'oreal Volcanic but I recently picked up a Milani Color Statement called Sweet Nectar and it packs quite a punch! It's a very bright orange that leans juuuuuust slightly red. The formula is creamy and not too drying. So far it has worn amazingly well, leaving a slight stain behind as it fades. It has a strong scent at first but it fades quickly. It smells like melon, I like it so I don't mind it.

On my eyes, for those that are wondering: L'oreal Hip silver (Platinum duo), Wet n Wild Creme Brulee, Wet n Wild Panther, Jordana Semi Permanent Liquid Liner and Milani Easyliner in black all applied over Too Faced Glitter Glue. Mascara is Benefit They're Real.

LOVE IT. My lips are horribly dry and flaky with this arctic weather. They looked awful and felt even worse. The elf Lip Exfoliator makes them fell amazing. You use it by rubbing it in small circles over your lips and the gritty sugar bits rub the dead skin off. It leaves my lips smooth and hydrated. It also doesn't taste too bad thanks to the sugar and aspartame.

Seriously, my lips haven't looked this good in ages. Matte lipstick here I come!

Clowning Around is an indie polish made by Polish Me Silly. It has a clear base with multiple sizes of translucent neon hex glitter. The base is thick but runny so you need to be careful not to dribble it everywhere while fishing for glitter. The biggest glitter pieces sink to the bottom and need some coaxing to come out. Hold the bottle upside down for a few minutes and then gently roll it in your palms. Those big pieces are slow to move through the base polish so you really do need to leave it upside down for a bit. Other than that it's a great polish. It dries quickly despite its thickness, has decent wear time, and doesn't need a sand blaster to remove. It actually comes off fine with regular nail polish remover so there's no need to break out the foil and 100% acetone to wrap your fingers. Wearing it with out top coat I did lose a few large glitters off my right hand at work, left hand was fine. I don't think this polish requires top coat if you apply carefully and make sure all edges are covered with the base polish.

White Out is a decent opaque white polish. It's thick and goopy but a few drops of polish thinner make it manageable. With out thinning it doesn't self level and sets with in seconds leaving you with patchy nails. The first coat is streaky but after the second it's smooth and opaque and the perfect base for neon glitter.Spookihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16701628672995907520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5863179013564933898.post-10623632934841770752013-11-22T08:43:00.001-08:002013-11-22T08:43:56.469-08:00Help Big Cats With Makeup

Purminerals is partnering with National Geographic for Big Cat week with a new makeup collection. The 3 piece kit contains the limited edition leopard print Mineral Glow, full sized Liquid Precision liner in Cat Eye and a tube of Big Blink mascara. Almost every time I see something marked "cheetah" or "leopard" it's WRONG.

this is not a jaguar, Forever21

I'm not going to feature every single species of big cat, as much as I'd love to it would just take too much time. This is just going to point out some of the cats that suffer from misidentification by the fashion industry.

THE CHEETAH

The cheetah is the fastest of the big cats, as such it is a leggy beast with deep chest and small head. Cheetahs have an extemely distinct look amongst the big cats so I really can't understand why they are the most commonly mistaken for something else.

Cheetahs also have spots that look like dots. They do not have rosettes.

THE AFRICAN LEOPARD

This African big cat is much stockier than a cheetah. Not as heavily built as a jaguar though.

The spots are large rosettes with tan centers.

THE CLOUDED LEOPARD

Smaller than the African Leopard but has the longest canine teeth in proportion to size so don't let their small stature fool you.

The pattern is a distinct cloud shaped rosette. While this cat isn't featured much in fashion it should be because it is fierce as fuck.

THE JAGUAR

This South American cat closely resembles the African leopard. It is a larger and stockier cat, however. The head and legs of the jaguar, compared to African leopard are much larger and heavier looking and offer the best way to tell the difference.

Spots, compared to an African leopard are very similar rosettes. Jaguar rosettes may be larger and have black marks in the center.

THE PANTHER

A panther is not a distinct species. It is a black color morph of a leopard, jaguar or cougar. The cat shown at left is an African leopard.

Faint rosettes may still be visible on black jaguars and leopards.

Tigers, lions, and cougars usually have it pretty easy and don't get called the wrong cat. At least there's that I guess! Hopefully now you can at the very least ID the cat on the Forever21 shirt as a cheetah.

Wedge sneakers have been a fairly polarizing trend for a little while. Most people seem to hate them and they definitely haven't caught on where I live. I love them though. Yes, some are stompy, clompy clodhoppers and fug as hell but I can't help it. I get height with the ease of sneakers.

I have the pair shown above from Target but the same pair is also available at Sears and there is also a very similar Skechers version that cost like twice as much.

They are so comfortable. I can wear them all day with out foot and leg pain. They have the best parts of sneakers- light weight, stable, good traction, and comfort with a bit more edge and style. I love that they go with just about everything I own but they're perfect for dressing up skinny jeans and a tee.

My favorite thing to wear with them is a moto jacket, slouchy tank and reptile skin print leggings.

Tresemme Split Remedy Serum is one of several Tresseme products that contain polyquanternium-28 and PVM/MA copolymer which make up the PEC complex.

As we learned from the
PEC post (thanks to the Beauty Brains), the PEC complex is a proven winner for sealing split ends.

Despite knowing that the PEC complex works I was hesitant to try this product. I honestly do not have good luck with Tresemme products and I tried the Split Remedy Leave In Conditioning Treatment and HATED it (that product has the PEC complex too but made my hair feel disgusting).

This product was purchased by me at Walmart

It
promises to seal up to 80% of split ends... I did not have the patience to
count my splits before and after use, even for the sake of science, so I
can't speak about how true the "80%" is.

One negative I have found is with the bottle, it is
pump action and always dispenses WAY too much product. I get a squirt
bigger than a US quarter no matter how light I press- which is enough to do my whole head. The product itself
is a slightly sticky and fairly runny goo. It has a definite silicone
feel to it, if you don't like 'cones you won't want to use this because
it's loaded with them. The 'cones are useful for giving the ends a nice
smooth finish but they make my hair feel heavy and weighed down.

I
have tried this product on damp hair and dry hair. It works best when
applied to damp hair and hit with a blow dryer. On dry hair it seems to
barely do anything.

The first time I tried it I applied to damp
hair and hit it with a blow dryer. I only found 2 split ends, snipped
them off then went to bed. By morning I found 8 split ends. As for how
many I had before, since I did not count them I can only say it was "a
lot". My hair is prone to split ends. After using it again last night on
damp then blow dried hair I counted about 12 split ends. None of my
split ends were wide-open Y shapes like before, I can clearly see the
split pieces are closer together but not completely sealed.

PEC
complex is a temporary treatment for split ends. I have noticed that
this product seals my split ends for about a day or so. With each day
since using it more and more splits unseal.

To keep the effects as long as possible avoid rubbing and brushing the ends of your hair.

Conclusion:
After
using this product the ends of my hair are less prone to tangling and
knotting. The ends appear and feel smoother but are weighed down a bit.
Split ends are less visible but this effect wears off in a day.Spookihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16701628672995907520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5863179013564933898.post-71930046388514159642013-11-12T06:10:00.000-08:002013-11-12T06:10:48.735-08:00The PEC Complex- Hair Repair That Works! Please visit this very informative post over at the Beauty Brains. These are textured polishes, which have been all the rage lately. It's a trend I've been slow to embrace but since my nails have become an uneven mess I find myself loving their camouflage effect.

The only other textured polish I have is Zoya London from the Pixie Dust line. It's gorgeous and shimmery. These SP polishes are much more gritty and matte. They really look like the colored sand that you'd pour into bottles and make sand art with.

Bang

Bang has more pink glitter and less yellow glitter. In the bottle it looks like neon tangerine.

Jolt

Jolt has more yellow than pink and has an almost "school bus yellow" color.

Jolt was applied 1 coat to the entire nail. A second coat of jolt was applied to the base of the nail. 2 coats of Bang were applied to the tip. I put one coat of top coat over it because they are just soooooo gritty. It took the edge off a bit but my nails still feel like sand paper.

I saw a couple other polishes in this collection, bright yellow-green and teal (two polishes with the concentrations reversed like Jolt and Bang) and a pink and blue one. You can see them here at Cool Polish. There also seems to be another reddish one that I did not see on the display, as seen here on Shades of Beauty.
Had to get glasses this week, but I don't mind since I can see better and have way less eye strain and headaches. The frames are black and have some tiny silver glitter in them. They are made by Bongo.

If you are wondering, my makeup is Missha Perfect Cover BB cream, Jordana Semi Permanent Eye Liner and Kate by Rimmel #14 lipstick (which is awesome btw, go by it). Necklace was purchased at XSRE on clearance for like $5! I think it was originally marked $21. It looks amazing with my Kreepsville skull collection necklace.

Hmm, I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this product. It promises up to 24 hrs of wear (which is a garbage claim that I'm sick of seeing) and says it is waterproof and wears comfortably.

Picked this up at Walmart for about $6. There are 4 other shades available: black, bronze, green and purple.

This color, 01, is bright shiny blue that is not commonly seen from drugstore makeup brands. It's a beautiful color!

There is no way I'm going to test the longevity of this product beyond the 16 hours or so that I typically wear my makeup. My skin is prone to break outs and eye area swelling so I'm not about to sleep in it and see how it looks when I wake up. I will say this product could possibly last 24 hours on someone that doesn't have oily lids.

The formula, once dried is pretty comfortable. It doesn't dry out the eyelid the way many waterproof formulas do. Doesn't bleed during application or smudge or flake once set.

Now, that aside, this product is GOOPY! Goopy, globby, thick, sticky, gross. It isn't the easiest thing to apply and get even. I typically smack a blob in the middle of my lid and spread it out using the brush.

nice shaped brush covered in goop

When I pull the brush out there is a little string of product that hangs off then shrinks back on to the brush. Inside the neck of the bottle a lot of product collects and gets wasted.

fresh liner straight off the brush

Freshly applied, you can see how uneven it looks. If you don't take time to apply it you'll get globs like that so you have to work slowly and patiently. Don't worry about going slow though as it has a pretty long dry time for eyeliner. That is probably due to how thick it is.

As far as being waterproof, it's pretty damned near impossible to remove with just water. The following rub test was done with out it being 100% dry.

furious back and forth rubbing for 20 seconds on the right side

Since it wasn't totally dry it budged a bit but it's still very much visible. It does hold up very well when wet- at work (in a pet store) I had a dog lick my eye (ew) while fitting a harness and it didn't look any worse for wear. It is certified dog slobber proof! My watery allergy eyes are also unable to ruin it, which is why I bought it in the first place.

I must warn you, don't make a mistake with this because it won't just clean up nice and easy with a q-tip. Even when still wet water alone will not totally clean this up. You need oil or waterproof makeup remover.

Almond oil and rubbing has removed most, but not all of it. I find I always have a few bits that are still there after washing my face. It is quite annoying to have to rub so much at the eye area to remove it.

THE GOOD:

long wearing

extremely water resistant

beautiful color

inexpensive

THE BAD

goopy

hard to apply

long dry time

hard to remove with makeup remover

product sticks to neck of the bottle making a mess and wasting product

All negatives aside I think I will pick it up in black and purple just because it lasts so well.

I'm pale because it's genetic. Why are you [insert skin color]? I choose not to tan because I don't want to look like a leather couch in my 30s and the color of a basted turkey is just not flattering. Tans emphasize all my skin imperfections too. I scar easily and my body is covered in little round scars from bug bites and scrapes I got as a kid. They are REALLY noticeable even with a light tan.

Don't accuse me of wearing the wrong foundation or being sick. THAT IS RUDE, K. Don't harass me about it loudly in public places (especially when I'm at work) because you just look like a freakin dumbass to everyone else. Trrrrrust me, it is genetic. One side of my family is all ginger Swedes, we don't do tanning.

What did you do to your hair?
I dyed it... what do you think?

Why do you always wear nail polish?
My nails are in awful shape. Nail polish keeps them from peeling and breaking (well, more than they would with out). It also hides the discolored marks on my nails. The short answer, however, is because I want to and I like it.

Why are you so skinny?
I'm not even going to entertain this one, especially in public. It's a rude question. I am actually average weight for my height. I am not sickly and I don't have an eating disorder. Also, don't pinch my love handles looking for an ounce of fat, personal space please!

What ever happened to manners? If you feel the need to interrogate someone about their appearance DON'T. Take a deep breath, step back and think about why you're bothered by it. If you're just curious maybe try to phrase your question in a less obnoxious way like "how do you manage to keep your skin so light this time of year?" or "your hair is interesting, how did you do it?".
If I remember correctly this started with a base of Rimmel French Cafe, a nude jelly. Then it was Nubar Holographic on top. The tips were made using Nailene tip guides and Color Club Disco Dress which was then topped with Fing'rs V.I.Purple, a glass fleck with pink iridescence.
This is all done over a base of Wet n Wild Spoiled Black Mamba, a grey glass flecked black. On the pinky it is topped with Orly Bubbly Bombshell, a fab fuchsia glitter. On the ring finger it is Pure Ice Wide Awake, a blue glitter. The rest have ncLA Sugar Fix, a gorgeous grey jelly with fuchsia and blue glitter.
